Irrigation System Maintenance in Summer: The Mid-Season Checklist

17 August 2026

In August, irrigation systems run at maximum capacity, often completing several cycles a day to compensate for evapotranspiration. It is therefore always advisable to schedule a maintenance visit aimed at preventing potential technical failures.

This is indeed the time of year when small defects — a filter starting to clog, a nozzle misfiring due to limescale, pressure dropping as a result of prolonged use of the water supply — stop being invisible and become real problems on the client’s lawn.

A quick site visit prevents emergency call-outs in September and protects the quality of the work carried out during installation.

The Mid-Season Technical Checklist

  • Filtration: check the condition of the filters (mesh, disc, or in-line, depending on the system). A clogged filter is often the primary cause of flow rate drops and nozzles that no longer perform correctly.
  • Nozzles and heads: inspect for limescale deposits, especially in areas with harder water.
  • Pressure: check the system inlet pressure and compare it with the design values. An abnormal drop may indicate a filter that needs cleaning or an upstream leak.
  • Valve boxes and solenoid valves: open the valve boxes and check the condition of fittings, connectors, and seals. Prolonged heat puts even the most robust hydraulic components under stress. Clean the solenoids if necessary.
  • Fittings downstream of solenoid valves: check for any leaks or loosening at points where a replacement must be carried out without dismantling the entire irrigation zone.

Filters: The System’s First Line of Defence

The choice is not solely determined by the type of filter, but by the quality of the incoming water. The mesh filter is the most suitable solution when the water contains few impurities. The filter element traps solid particles through a calibrated mesh and is straightforward to inspect and clean, making it an effective choice for systems supplied with already well-filtered water.

The disc filter uses a series of stacked discs with grooves that provide in-depth filtration, effectively trapping even the finest particles. It is therefore particularly recommended when the water contains silt, sand, or other suspended matter. Self-cleaning versions are also available for large systems, reducing the need for manual maintenance.

The in-line filter, finally, describes how the filter is installed along the pipe. It can be fitted with either a mesh or disc filter element, combining the benefits of both technologies. It is widely used in drip and micro-irrigation systems, where compactness and ease of maintenance make all the difference.

Whatever solution is chosen, maintenance remains essential. Filters must be checked and cleaned regularly, especially at the start and end of the irrigation season, to keep the system efficient and prevent clogging and pressure drops.

EZ-Open CERT Valve Boxes: Fast Inspections, Less Time on Site

The EZ-Open CERT valve boxes (UNI EN 124-6 A15 certified) remain practical allies during inspection: the integrated, patented Rain handle speeds up and simplifies the opening of solenoid valve box covers, with a vandal-resistant threaded bolt and integrated nut closure that protects the system even when it is not under the client’s direct supervision. An easy-to-open valve box means less time spent on each routine check — a detail that counts when mid-season checks multiply across several systems in a single day.

Rapid Lock: Targeted Replacements Without Stopping the System

If during mid-season irrigation system maintenance you find a damaged fitting or a sprinkler to replace, the Rapid Lock system is the right choice for this type of work: a quick-release opening and closing mechanism that allows the fitting to be removed easily and safely, optimising installation times and reducing time on site. All fittings feature a release system that allows them to be removed and reused without damage, with no need for tools or solvents, for a clean operation even on already buried and operational systems.

Mid-Season Irrigation System Maintenance Prevents More Serious Damage

A mid-season check of filters, nozzles, pressure, and valve boxes takes just a few minutes per system, but avoids emergency call-outs at the busiest time of the year. Where a damaged fitting needs replacing, Rapid Lock models allow this to be done quickly. A practical and effective solution for keeping the system in top condition and demonstrating your value as a professional installer.
