Smart landscape garden irrigation: how it works and what are the benefits for landscape professionals

26 April 2022

The future of irrigation is connected and sustainable

In the hustle and bustle of a world increasingly focused on new technologies, it happens that new products and unfamiliar terminology can appear on the market and the exact function or meaning can be difficult to understand.
The irrigation sector is no exception. That is why, for experienced gardeners as well as plumbers and electricians, staying up-to-date with the latest developments on the market, including smart garden irrigation, is crucial for a ‘green professional’ who wishes to work effectively and offer an optimal service to his clients.
Let’s start at the beginning: what is smart irrigation or intelligent irrigation? Smart irrigation refers to the use of connected tools that enable better management of water resources with the aim of reducing installation time and water consumption.

What changes compared to the past?

Compared to traditional systems, Smart Irrigation retains its main function, i.e. to irrigate greenery, but changes the concept considerably. In fact, if before it was necessary for the operator or customer to be present on site in order to carry out certain actions on irrigation, the use of innovative technologies from other fields has made it possible to monitor and intervene on the irrigation system anywhere and at any time. Checking the status of the irrigation system, acting on the system by opening or closing it, but also modifying the parameters already programmed is in fact simple and fast thanks to the control platforms via App or WebApp.

Why choose an intelligent irrigation system?

The benefits of using a connected irrigation system are several, both for the installer and his customer. As far as professionals are concerned, the benefits can be summarised as:
1.     Easy monitoring: check the status of each irrigation installation site on one screen;
2.     Time-saving, and therefore cost-saving: there is no need to physically go to the site to modify the programming;
3.     Ease of use: get your work done in just a few clicks using the App;
4.     Reduced water consumption: the system, which is connected to the nearest weather stations, does not operate in the event of adverse weather forecasts, thus avoiding unnecessary water and energy wastage;
5.     Security and relaxation: having everything under control and more time at one’s disposal will provide more serenity and flexibility in carrying out one’s profession or managing your garden.

What should be evaluated before installing a smart irrigation system?

There are certainly a number of factors that need to be taken into account when designing the most suitable solution. Let us look together at some simple steps to follow

  • Know the flow rate and water pressure of the system;
  • Assessing and calculating the size of the garden
    Tap controllers with 1 or 2 zones are best suited when you have only a few areas to irrigate, otherwise controllers allowing the management of several areas are preferred.
    These control units exist in two versions: those for outdoors and those for indoors. The outdoor ones can be installed outside the home and are protected by a cover flap. Indoor units, on the other hand, have no protection and need to be installed in dry, weather-proof locations (such as utility rooms).
  • Know the power supply of the control unit: tap and valve box units are battery-operated, outdoor or indoor units require an electrical outlet.

Connected, self-sufficient and environmentally sustainable: The Vision™ smart irrigation system

At Rain we have always had a passion for innovation, which is why our in-house R&D department developed Vision™, the first smart irrigation system designed and manufactured 100% in Italy..
Compared to most systems or products dedicated to smart garden irrigation, Vision™ has additional advantages that make the professional’s job easier, both from the point of view of ease of use and time-saving installation and system management.
In addition to time, we also paid special attention to another precious resource: water. Vision, in fact, is powered by lithium batteries that can be kept constantly charged thanks to tools that make use of the clean energy provided by the sun and water. To complete the system, there is also a set of Wi-Fi connection devices that can raise the remote connection to its maximum power.
