The Mid-Season Technical Checklist

• Nozzles and heads: inspect for limescale deposits, especially in areas with harder water.
• Pressure: check the system inlet pressure and compare it with the design values. An abnormal drop may indicate a filter that needs cleaning or an upstream leak.
• Valve boxes and solenoid valves: open the valve boxes and check the condition of fittings, connectors, and seals. Prolonged heat puts even the most robust hydraulic components under stress. Clean the solenoids if necessary.
• Fittings downstream of solenoid valves: check for any leaks or loosening at points where a replacement must be carried out without dismantling the entire irrigation zone.

Filters: The System’s First Line of Defence

The choice is not solely determined by the type of filter, but by the quality of the incoming water. The mesh filter is the most suitable solution when the water contains few impurities. The filter element traps solid particles through a calibrated mesh and is straightforward to inspect and clean, making it an effective choice for systems supplied with already well-filtered water.

The disc filter uses a series of stacked discs with grooves that provide in-depth filtration, effectively trapping even the finest particles. It is therefore particularly recommended when the water contains silt, sand, or other suspended matter. Self-cleaning versions are also available for large systems, reducing the need for manual maintenance.

The in-line filter, finally, describes how the filter is installed along the pipe. It can be fitted with either a mesh or disc filter element, combining the benefits of both technologies. It is widely used in drip and micro-irrigation systems, where compactness and ease of maintenance make all the difference.

Whatever solution is chosen, maintenance remains essential. Filters must be checked and cleaned regularly, especially at the start and end of the irrigation season, to keep the system efficient and prevent clogging and pressure drops.
